The Merrimack Valley offers a different kind of New England lifestyle, with historic communities, riverfront neighborhoods, outdoor recreation, local businesses, and a wide range of housing options. At the heart of it is Haverhill, a city with a history and character all its own.

A City Shaped by the Merrimack River 

Haverhill's story is closely tied to the Merrimack River. Established in 1640 as Pentucket, Haverhill eventually evolved from an agricultural settlement into an important industrial center. Saw and grist mills, tanneries, boatyards, and eventually shoe manufacturing all played a role in shaping the city. 

Shoe manufacturing was Haverhill's leading industry for 180 years. That history is still visible today in the city's historic architecture, former industrial buildings, and downtown streetscape. 

That said, Haverhill isn't a city living in the past. Its historic character sits alongside a revitalized central business district, local businesses, restaurants, arts and cultural offerings, and neighborhoods that continue to evolve. 

There's Plenty to Do Outside the House 

One of the things that stands out about the Merrimack Valley is access to outdoor space. In Haverhill, Winnekenni Park encompasses approximately 700 acres and includes more than nine miles of trails. The park offers hiking, biking, dog walking, horseback riding, nature viewing, and winter recreation. 

Oh yeah, there's a castle, too. Winnekenni Castle was built in the 1870s by Dr. James R. Nichols as a summer home. Nichols used local glacial boulders in its construction, and the property became Haverhill's first public park in 1895. 

The Merrimack River adds another dimension to the community, with opportunities for walking, jogging, bird watching, and boating. According to the City of Haverhill, the river is also home to a growing population of bald eagles. 

For buyers who want access to nature without giving up the conveniences of a city, that's an appealing combination. 

A Different Kind of Location 

Haverhill also offers something important for today's buyers: flexibility. 

The city is connected to the broader Merrimack Valley as well as the Boston metropolitan area. Haverhill's commuter rail station is the northernmost station of the MBTA's Haverhill Line, providing direct rail service to Boston's North Station. 

The city is also a hub for Merrimack Valley Transit, which serves communities throughout the region. For buyers whose lives don't fit neatly into one geographic box, that connectivity can be an important part of the equation. You can have access to city amenities, outdoor recreation, and neighboring communities while keeping connections toward Boston and Southern New Hampshire. 

What Does That Mean for Real Estate? 

From a real estate perspective, one of the advantages of looking beyond a single town is simply having more choices. 

Haverhill has a mix of housing that includes historic properties, established neighborhoods, condominiums, multifamily homes, and newer construction. Various parts of the city offer quite different settings and housing styles, which means buyers can look for the combination of location, property, and lifestyle that makes sense for them. 

Looking Beyond the Usual Search Area 

For some buyers, the right home may be in the town they've always pictured themselves living in. For others, expanding the search by a few miles can open entirely different possibilities.
